A video doorbell turns out to be one of those gadgets you wonder how you managed without. Seeing who is at the door before you answer, getting a ping when a parcel lands, talking to a courier while you are sat at work two hundred miles away. Small things, but they add up.
Where people stall is the choice. Ring is on every other doorstep. Nest looks the part. Eufy keeps getting mentioned by people who are sick of paying monthly fees. So let me cut through it.
The Catch Nobody Warns You About
Before you look at a single spec, you need to know about the fee. Most video doorbells film your doorstep and keep the footage in the cloud. Want to go back and watch what happened an hour ago, or save a clip of a dodgy looking van? That usually means paying a monthly fee on top of what you spent on the doorbell.
Ring charges it. Nest charges it. Eufy does not, because it keeps the footage stored locally, on the doorbell itself or a small base unit in your house. Over a few years that gap adds up to real money, so keep it in the back of your mind as you read on.

Ring: The Easy, Familiar Pick
There is a reason Ring is the name everyone knows. The kit is well made, fitting it is painless, and the app does not give you any trouble. If your house already runs on Alexa, Ring just clicks into place. Answer the door from an Echo Show, hear the chime through your speakers, run the lot from one app.
The snag is the same one that follows most Ring kit around: the fee. Skip it and you can watch live but you cannot rewatch a thing once it has happened. For most people that makes the subscription more or less unavoidable, and it ticks along quietly draining your account year after year. Not a reason to walk away, but factor it in before you commit.
You are an Alexa house and you want it all talking to each other nicely. It is also the gentlest place to start if you have never fitted a video doorbell and just want one that works out of the box.

Nest: The Good Looking One
The Nest doorbell is probably the smartest looking of the bunch, and the HDR video copes really well when the light is awkward, which describes most front doors for half the day. If you already run Google Home with a Nest speaker or screen, it slots in without complaint.
The fee situation mirrors Ring. Google Home Premium (which replaced Nest Aware) unlocks your recordings and the cleverer alerts, but it is another monthly cost stacked on top of a doorbell that was not cheap to begin with. What you get for it is the most polished feel of the three, especially if your home already leans Google.
Your home runs on Google, you want the cleanest picture in bright sun or low light, and the monthly fee does not put you off getting the most from it.

Eufy: The One With No Monthly Bill
Eufy made its name on a single promise: no fees. Your footage is stored locally, on the doorbell itself or a base unit in the house, so you can scroll back through your doorstep whenever you like without handing over a penny each month. For a lot of people that is the whole argument settled right there.
The hardware holds its own too. Eufy films in 2K, gives you night vision in colour rather than the usual grey murk. The E340 adds a second camera pointing down, so parcels left on the step are in shot too. The app is a touch rougher round the edges than the other two, but it does everything you will actually reach for.
Some Eufy models keep footage on a separate base unit that sits plugged in indoors. The E340 below stores it on the doorbell itself, so there is no extra box to find a home for.
You want the sharpest picture, or you simply refuse to pay a monthly fee for the next five years. Add it all up and Eufy comes out a good deal cheaper to live with.

So, Which One?
Alexa house after something simple from a name you trust? Ring. Just go in knowing the fee comes with it.
On Google and fussy about picture quality? Nest is worth the extra. The HDR footage and the way it ties into Google Home are the real draw.
Want the best kit for your money and no monthly bill nagging at you? Eufy. The 2K picture and colour night vision win on paper, and skipping the fee makes it far cheaper to own over the years.
If you have no strong loyalty to one ecosystem already, Eufy is the one I would put on your door without thinking twice.
Doorbells trip people up more than you would think, especially when there is old wiring involved or you are tying it into other cameras. Book a free 15 minute call and I will talk you through exactly what your door needs.
